The grave marker for Confederate General
Lawrence O'Bryan Branch was restored by the
Captain James Iredell Waddell Chapter of Raleigh. A North
Carolina congressman when the War came, General Branch played a major role in the advance
of A. P. Hill at Sharpsburg to defeat Federal efforts against the Confederate right on
September 17, 1862. He was killed by a Union sniper after the Confederate line was
stabilized. Restoration of General Branch's marker officially began July 21, 1999, with
the straightening of the marker and the strengthening of its base.
